Von erhabenem Betrachterstandpunkt bietet sich ein vielschichtiger sowohl in die Ferne als auch in die Tiefe gestaffelter Blick in ein hügeliges Flusstal dar. Links ein Gasthaus, das sich durch einen Ausleger auszeichnet und mehreren davor sitzenden Figuren, weiter hinten eine Art Volksfest mit dahinter sich erstreckender Dorfstraße, die optisch hin zu einer im Lichtblau vor der Sonne erstrahlenden Höhenburg führt. Rechts weitere um den sich schlängelnden Fluss gruppierte Festungsbauten, bei denen sich Griffier sicherlich an der Mannigfaltigkeit der Burgen im Rheinland orientiert und inspiriert hat. Die Komposition muss damals sehr beliebt gewesen sein, denn sie begegnet uns in ähnlicher Weise gleich mehrmals im Schaffen des Künstlers.

This composition must have been very popular at the time because we encounter it in a similar way several times in the artist’s oeuvre. These are: a river landscape held at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (England), inv. no. 379; a river landscape held at the Schwerin State Museum, inv. no. G 370; a painting in which the viewer looks down into the valley from a higher vantage point, which was offered for sale at Christie’s, Amsterdam on 11 May 2005 under lot 37.
