Die Bronze, die von Émile Coriolan Hippolyte Guillemin entworfen worden ist, hält sich an die Darstellung Napoleons auf steigendem Pferd auf dem Gemälde „Bonaparte franchissant le Grand-Saint-Bernard“ von Jacques-Louis David aus dem Jahr 1800, das sich allein in Versailles in zwei Versionen erhalten hat: Napoleon sitzt auf seinem steigenden Pferd mit erhobener Hand, unter ihnen ein felsgeformter Sockel.
