Im Entstehungszeitraum des Gemäldes wurden Jahreszeiten-Allegorien zumeist für Raumausstattungen herrschaftlicher Anwesen, oder auch venezianische Palazzi in Auftrag gegeben. Das Ovalformat hat im 18. Jahrhundert auch eine neue Blüte erlebt.
Wie üblich, ist die Allegorie des Sommers als jugendliche Göttin Ceres gezeigt, hier mit entblößtem Oberkörper. Die Bewegung der Figur wird nicht zuletzt durch die Armhaltung betont, wobei hier der linke Arm sich dem Ovalformat geschickt einfügt. Die erhobene Hand hält einen Ährenhalm und eine rote Mohnblüte, traditionsgemäß ist das Haar der Dargestellten mit Kornähren geschmückt.
Der in Mittelitalien gebürtige Maler ging um etwa 1650 nach Venedig, scheint jedoch ein Schüler der Bologneser Carracci-Nachfolge gewesen zu sein, während über seine erste Schulung nichts bekannt geworden ist. Es wird angenommen, dass er ein Mentor der Pastellistin Rosalba Carriera (1673-1757) gewesen ist. In Venedig schuf er die Gottvater-Darstellung an der Decke der Kirche San Giovanni Crisostomo, aber auch die „Anbetung der Könige“ in der venezianischen Kirche San Moisé. Bekannt wurde er mit seinen Allegorien und antiken Götterdarstellungen, so etwa für den Palazzo Badoer. Als Radierer schuf er zudem eine Serie von ca. 60 Darstellungen mythologischer Szenen. A.R.
