Blick aufs offene Meer in heller Lichtstimmung, mit hellen und grauen Wolken. Im Bildzentrum ein Fischerkahn, besetzt mit drei Männern, von denen einer das Ruder hält, auf dem Kopf eine rote, wohl der Landestracht gehörigen Mütze. Rechts seitlich weitere Segler in der Ferne vor rötlich beleuchteter Sandbank, links am leuchtend hellen Horizont ein Mastsegler. Fliegende Möwen beleben die ansonsten ruhige, wie lautlose Stimmung.
Der Stil des Gemäldes verrät seine Schulung an der Akademie in München, die er ab 1864 besuchte. Er wurde dort Schüler des bekannten Prof. Carl Theodor von Piloty, neben vielen weiteren griechischen Maler, wie etwa Nikolaus Gysis, Theodoros Vryzakis oder Georgios Iakovidis. In den folgenden Jahren nahm er an Ausstellungen der Münchner Künstlergenossenschaft teil. 1867 schuf er die „Seeschlacht von Lissa“, ein Gemälde, das er gelegentlich des Wettbewerbes der Wiener Kunstausstellung präsentiert hatte und sogleich von Kaiser Franz Joseph erworben wurde.
1883 in seiner Heimat zurück, lehrte er bis 1903 an der Hochschule der Bildenden Künste in Athen sowie am Kunstzentrum in Piräus, das er gegründet hatte.
Unverkennbar ist in seinem Werk die Prägung des Realismus der Münchner Schule, wobei seine Bildthemen jedoch wesentlich den Eindrücken seiner Heimat galten. Vor allem durch seine Marinebilder wurde er alsbald – und bis heute – der „Vater der Marinemalerei“ genannt. 2008 erzielte sein Bild „Karaiskakis Landung bei Phaliro“ auf einer Auktion nahezu zwei Millionen Euro.
