Das Bildthema des Alten Testaments behandelt hier die Geschichte Esthers, künftiger Gemahlin des Perserkönigs Ahasveros (Asuero), die dessen Gunst gewinnt durch ihre Anmut und die Tatsache, dass sie ihn vor einem Attentat warnt. Ihr und ihrem Vormund Mordechai wird die Rettung der jüdischen Bevölkerung im Perserreich zugeschrieben. Diese hätten innerhalb eines Tages ermordet werden sollen, Ester vereitelt jedoch den Genozid durch ein Gegendekret, welches den Juden gestattet am 13. Adar selbst für ihr Leben zu kämpfen, sodass keiner mehr wagte dem ersten Dekret zu folgen (Buch Ester). Hieraus entstand das Purimfest.
