Bronze, gegossen, ziseliert und patiniert. Auf rechteckiger Basis die auf dem Boden kauernde Figur eines Messerschleifers, nach der Antike gestaltete Skulptur. Die antike Marmorfigur, die wir aus einer Zeichnung von Maarten Jacobsz van Heemskerck (1498-1574) aus dem Jahr 1536 kennen, wurde 1578 von Ferdinand de‘Medici erworben. Giovanni Battista Foggini (1652-1725) fertigte 1684 eine Marmorkopie der Antike für Versailles an, die 1688 durch einen Abguss der Brüder Keller ersetzt wurde. Ein Brief des Direktors der Französischen Akademie in Rom, Monsieur La Teuliere, bezeugt das besondere Interesse des Königs am Arrotino und seinen Wunsch eine Version dieses berühmten antiken Marmors zu besitzen. So ist in dem Inventar der Sammlung Ludwig XIV unter Nr. 14 erwähnt: Eine Figur eines Mannes, der einen Custo schärft, 14 Zoll hoch. Ein weiteres Exemplar gehörte zur Sammlung August des Starken in Dresden, welches von Raymond Leplat in Frankreich erworben wurde und in London aufbewahrt wird (Inv.Nr. S189).

Bronze; cast, chased and patinated. The figure of a knife grinder is crouching on the floor on this rectangular base. It is sculpted after a model from antiquity. The ancient marble figure, known from a drawing by Maarten Jacobsz van Heemskerck (1498-1574) from 1536 was acquired by Ferdinand de’Medici in 1578.
The inventory of the collection of Louis XIV, no. 14 mentions: A figure of a man, sharpening a Custo, 14 inches tall. A further example was held at the collection of Augustus the Strong in Dresden, purchased by Raymond Leplat in France and today held in London (inv. no. S189).
