Harry Potter: elder wand
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 1 and 2, 2010 and 2011.
Length: 36 cm.
Certificate of origin and authenticity.
At the end of the second part of the Deathly Hallows movie, Harry Potter manages to regain this wand from Lord Voldemort, who had taken it from Professor Dumbledore’s grave during the first part. This unusually shaped wand was designed by Pierre Bohanna.
Provenance:
Private collection, United States.
Notes:
This wand is at the center of the story in the final movies of the Harry Potter saga. It is known to be the most powerful wand in the world and it used to belong to Albus Dumbledore, one of the most important characters in the movies as well as one of the most loved ones by the audience. At the end of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – part 1” Voldemort stole the wand from Dumbledore’s grave trying to master the wand and its power. In the final part of the movie “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – part 2” Harry Potter wins back the Elder Wand as its rightful owner. The Elder Wand is the only wand in the whole saga that has its own story, from when it was created by Death itself as a gift for one of the brothers in “The Tale of the Three Brothers”, a story inside the fictional children’s book “The Tales of Beedle the Bard”, passing through various owners such as the dark wizard Gellert Grindewald, Albus Dumbledore, Voldemort and finally Harry Potter. J.K. Rowling describes the wand telling us that it is made of elder wood, obviously, and a Thestral hair, a fictional animal strongly connected with death. This is certainly the wand with the most recognizable design of all. It was designed by artist and prop maker Pierre Bohanna. About the Elder Wand he says: “What makes it so recognizable among all the other wands, it is that it is not just one of the thinnest wands but it has those very beautiful small knots”, he also claims that, at the time they created the design, they did not know that this wand was going to become so important as one of the Deathly Hallows, but “since the beginning, you can easily recognize it even from a distance, and it is just how it should be, since it is the undisputed queen of all wands, compared to which all the others disappear”. The two movies in which this wand was used were a commercial success, especially part 2 being the highest grossing film in 2011 and the highest-grossing film in the Harry Potter series, as well as in the Wizarding World franchise. The film won several awards and was nominated for many more, including three nominations at the Academy Awards for Best Art Direction, Best Makeup and Best Visual Effects.
