(1251344) (13)

Francis Picabia,
1879 Paris – 1953
DOUBLE PORTRAITCharcoal on paper.
Visible size: 72.5 x 53.5 cm.
Signed lower left “Francis Picabia”. Aperture in backboard revealing dedication to Paul Éluard with signature on the reverse “pour celui qui le garde ou regarde”.
Framed with mount under glass.

Three-quarter length figures, probably of a young mother with her daughter in an intimate, yet depressing posture. Probably created around ca. 1930. Folds and tears along the sides. Not examined out of frame.

Provenance:
Dedicated by Francis Picabia to his friend Paul Éluard (1891-1968; see dedication on the reverse). The drawing probably shows the wife of Paul Éluard and her daughter Cécile born in 1918. In 1932 she divorced Éluard for Salvador DalÍ (1904-1989).

This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
