Bedeutender französischer Maler der Moderne in dem Kreis französischer Künstler, der vor allem in enger Freundschaft mit André Derain (1880-1954) wirkte und die Entstehung des Fauvismus einleitet. Als Postimpressionist wurde er zeitweise von dem Galeristen Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler betreut. 1955 Teilnehmer der documenta 1 in Kassel. 2008 Würdigung seiner Werke durch eine Ausstellung im Musée du Luxembourg in Paris.
