Rest. Verso eine kleine Unterlegung. (1190163) (13)
Jacques Courtois,
also known as “Borgognone”,
1621 Saint-Hippolyte – 1676 Rome
LARGE BATTLE SCENE
Oil on canvas. Relined.
50 x 108.5 cm.
In parcel-gilt and ebonised frame.
An armour-clad rider on a grey horse is galloping diagonally through the thick of the battle scene set outside the walls of an Italian city. Right next to the rider the tree crown of a pine tree is pointing to the right, thus in the opposite direction of the rider’s direction. Apart from the distinctive features of the depiction the elongated format is also typical for Courtois, as he hereby achieves a horizontal compression of the events and manages to accommodate numerous figures. Restored.
