Großformatige Schilderung eines Sonntags im Engadin- Gebirge. Von dem Gemälde existiert eine Variante. Erich Erler war der jüngere Bruder von Fritz Erler. Aufgrund einer schweren Lungenerkrankung reiste er 1898 zur Genesung nach Samaden ins Engadin. Dort lernte er den Arzt und Kunstsammler Dr. Oskar Bernhard und das Werk Giovanni Segantinis kennen, das seine Technik und Motive stark beeinflusste. "Nach der Beschäftigung mit Segantini schildert er in divisionistischer Malweise mittels pastos modulierter Farbsetzung in naturlyrischer Auffassung den Wechsel der Jahreszeiten in den ruhigen, nur dünn besiedelten Hochtälern des Engadin mit der Durchsichtigkeit dieser reinen klaren Lüfte, in denen die Ferne so seltsam und klar erscheint" (Fritz v. Ostini, 1906). "Wie in einer Bühneninszenierung, oft mit symbolistischen Anklängen, werden die meist urtümlich wirkenden, stets im Einklang mit der Natur stehenden Gestalten des kargen Gebirgslebens in den Vordergrund des Bildraumes gerückt" (Bernd Dürr). Erler wirkte nicht nur als Maler, sondern war darüber hinaus als Grafiker für die Zeitschrift "Jugend" tätig und Mitglied der Künstlervereinigung "Die Scholle" in München, wo er ab 1903 ansässig war.
