Schifano zählt zu den wichtigsten italienischen Künstlern des Postmodernismus. Mit Tano Festa und Franco Angeli gehörte er zur Kerngruppe der "Scuola Romana". Seine Gemälde konzentieren sich oftmals nur auf eine bis zwei Farben.
