Die beiden Gemälde in gleichem Rahmen, jedoch nicht von gleicher Hand erschaffen. Das erstgenannte Brustbild des bayerischen Königs Max I Joseph geht auf ein um 1810 entstandenes, früheres Gemälde von Joseph Karl Stieler (1781 - 1858) zurück, das sich im Deutschordensschloss Ellingen befindet. Das vorliegende Gemälde ist darstellungsgleich, trägt jedoch am rechten Oberrand (vom Rahmen verdeckt) die Signatur "C. v. Manlich, 1817". Christian Mannlich war Maler, Architekt und Lithograf und seit 1799 in München als Hofmaler Maximilians sowie als Generaldirektor aller Gemäldegalerien und Kabinette Bayerns tätig, 1808 wurde er geadelt. In seinen späteren Jahren war er vor allem als Leiter der höfischen Kunstsammlungen tätig und nur gelegentlich noch als Maler wirkend. Insofern ist das hier signierte Gemälde von gewisser Bedeutung.
Das Gegenstück ist von anderer Hand, was sowohl die etwas kontrastreichere Malweise, als auch die gemalte, ovale Inneneinfassung zeigt. Auch das Bild der Königin Karoline Friederike Wilhelmine dürfte auf ein Gemäldevorbild zurückzuführen sein. Jedenfalls existiert ein damals veröffentlichter Stich (Radierung) von Fleischmann, wohl gefertigt nach dem Gemälde von Joseph Stieler. Dieses völlig darstellungsgleich, ebenfalls mit Diadem, dazugehöriger Halskette und seitlichen Tüllspitzen auf rotem Kleid. Gemälde der Karoline von Bayern sind äußerst selten in den Sammlungen und auf dem Kunstmarkt. (9405924)
