Von den beiden Cranachs und deren Werkstätten gelangten aufgrund der Beliebtheit des Themas eine große Zahl von Darstellungen der Lucretia in höfische, öffentliche und private Sammlungen. Sämtlich in Dreiviertelfigur, in rotem Kleid und entblößter Brust, mit krönendem Haarkranz oder Pelzhaube. Dargestellt, wie sie sich mit dem Dolch tötet.
Gemäß antiker Legende sei sie von Tarquinius vergewaltigt und entehrt worden, was sie zum Suizid trieb, politisch aber einen Wechsel von der römischen Tyrannen- zur Senatorenherrschaft herbeigeführt hatte. Das Thema konnte in der Renaissance moralisch interpretiert werden, lieferte aber auch den Vorwand freizügiger Nacktdarstellung.
Neben den unterschiedlichen Originalversionen in weit größeren Formaten kommt das vorliegende Werk am nächsten den Beispielen im Kunstmuseum Nischni Nowgorod (ehemals Gorki) von 1535 mit dem Schlangensignum des Lucas Cranach d.Ä. Hier zeigt das kleine Gemälde eine Feinmalerei auf dünner Holzplatte. Halsketten, Dolch und Haarbänder etc. in Muschelgold gemalt. A.R. (13713352) (11)
