Oil on canvas.
60 x 71.5 cm.
Signed lower left. Dated “1922” on the reverse of the canvas. Stretcher with label “Loiseau n. 12110, La Place de la Bastille, Paris, 14 juillet 1922.”
The place where once stood the Bastille before the 1789 Revolution - a symbol of the unrestricted power of the Ancien Régime - the July Column now stands, crowned by the Spirit of Freedom and commemorating the 1830 Revolution. The Bastille was stormed on 14 July during the 1789 Revolution and fittingly Loiseau created this painting on 14 July 1922 affirming the will to freedom, skilfully expressed in his brisk brushwork.
