Provenienz:
Konsul Karl Bergsten, Stockholm (1869-1953), als Leandro da Ponte, genannt Bassano, zug. (Kat. 1943).

Auktion Artcurial, Paris, 19. Juni 2012: zugeschrieben an Agostino Carracci.
Privatsammlung.
Anmerkung 1:
Anmerkung 2:
Gut vergleichbar ist auch ein Lautespieler im Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (Inv.Nr. 48.55). (1351441) (1) (13)

PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN
Oil on canvas.
112.5 x 93 cm.
Notes:
According to the previous owner, Mina Gregori confirmed the authenticity of the work in a handwritten letter from 2002. She dates the present painting to 1590 and compares it with a painting held at the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples, which shows a triple portrait and one of the depicted figures compares very well with the present portrait (inv. Q369). The Portrait of a Man playing a Lute at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (inv. no. 48.55) also compares well.
