(1330642) (1) (13)

STILL LIFE OF THE SALVATION OF AUSTRIA
Oil on canvas.
98 x 156 cm.
Two drums are covered with fabric on which the Austrian coat of arms with the Habsburg eagle is emblazoned. This is obviously the depiction of an armoury, which is filled with halberds, cannonballs, helmets, trumpets, two-handed swords, and swords – in short everything that symbolically belongs in a military conflict – but is currently not used.
Notes:
In 1683, Vienna was attacked by a huge Turkish army.
Emperor Leopold fled from the capital to Passau. King John Sobieski III of Poland rushed to his aid and the Turkish army was decisively defeated at the Battle of Kahlenberg.
