Unter hohem Himmel mit großen Wolkenformationen, im rötlich-orangen Licht der untergehenden Sonne, ein zugefrorener Fluss mit mehreren Figuren. Im Zentrum ein stehender Pferdeschlitten, der gesammeltes Holz und Reisig beinhaltet. Zwei Männer und ein Junge sind gerade beim Entladen des Holzes. Rechtsseitig fährt ein Schlitten mit zwei Figuren an ihnen vorbei, während am linken Uferrand ein Mann dabei ist Holz zu zerhacken. Im Hintergrund am Ufer zwischen den hohen, malerisch in den Himmel ragenden kahlen Eichenbäumen ein Gehöft mit einer davor stehenden Frau. In der Bildmitte ist zudem im Hintergrund ein Schlittschuhläufer und die Silhouette einer Windmühle zu erkennen. Stimmungsvolle harmonische Malerei mit gekonnter Lichtführung.
Der Künstler war ein niederländischer Landschaftsmaler, der 1834 nach Kleve kam. 1841 gründete er dort eine Zeichenakademie. Das Wirken Koekkoeks und seiner Schüler begründete die Klever Romantik. Er war Mitglied der Königlichen Akademie der bildenden Künste in Amsterdam und wurde mehrfach mit Medaillen und Orden ausgezeichnet.
