In weiter bergiger Landschaft, vor hohen Felsen an einem Stein sitzend, der ihm als Tisch dient für ein aufgeschlagenes Buch, mehrere weitere Bücher, eine Sanduhr und ein kleines Tintenfass mit Federkiel. Er trägt ein langes ärmelloses dunkelblaues Gewand, hat seinen Kopf leicht seitlich auf seine rechte Hand gestützt und blickt nachdenklich bei gerunzelter Stirn mit seinen dunklen Augen seitlich nach unten. Gezeigt werden die typischen Attribute des Heiligen: auf der unteren linken Seite seine Kardinalstracht mit dazugehörigem rotem Hut, ein Totenschädel auf einem Steinabsatz, diverse Bücher und ein großer Löwe auf der unteren rechten Seite. Gezeigt wird er hier bei seinen Studien. Rechtsseitig fällt der Blick auf eine Landschaft, in überwiegend hellen und dunklen Grüntönen sowie auf einen Berg, an dessen Spitze neben einem Haus auch eine Kirche unter blauem Himmel zu erkennen ist. Malerei überwiegend in Erd- und Grüntönen, besonders hervorgehoben jedoch die rot leuchtende Kardinalskleidung. Die Darstellung des Hieronymus ist in der Kunstgeschichte ein beliebtes Motiv, das sich bei vielen Künstlern wiederfindet. Rest., teils Retuschen, Rahmenschäden.
Anmerkung:
In der Vorbesitzertradition wird Bril (1550-1583) genannt. Stilistisch ist das Gemälde nahe bei den Brüdern Mathijs und Paul Bril einzuordnen. (13218837) (18)
