Mit Gravur nach dem Stich von Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617) mit entsprechender Aufschrift „Quis evadet“, in der Bedeutung „Wer entrinnt (dem Tode)?“. Das Memento mori-Motiv zeigt einen Putto zwischen Rauchgefäß und Blumenvase über einen Totenschädel gebeugt, in den Händen eine Schale mit Seifenblasen. Seitlich feine Profile ohne Silbermarken, daher wohl in hocharistrokratischem Auftrag gefertigt. Auf speziell gefertigtem Aufsteller eingelegt.
Anmerkung:
2017 wurde bei Sotheby‘s eine identische, jedoch in Gold gefertigte Dose verauktioniert (Durchmesser: 8,7 cm. 207 g).
Der Stich, welcher der Darstellung zum Vorbild vorlag wurde von Hendrick Goltzius gefertigt. Interessanterweise ist die Darstellung auf beiden der bekannten Dosen seitenverkehrt erfolgt, was vermuten lässt, dass sie bereits auf eine Vorzeichnung des Stiches zurückgehen könnten. Der Stich entstand etwa 1590, womit die Datierung der Dosen in das späte 16. und beginnende 17. Jahrhundert zu setzen ist. Die Golddose erzielte bei Sotheby's einen Preis von 62.500 Pfund.
