Im Mittelpunkt dieses hochformatigen Gemäldes, das eine Erzählung aus der griechischen Mythologie wiedergibt, die rechts aus einer Wolke erscheinende Mondgöttin Diana, in ihrem wohlfrisierten, geflochtenen Haar ihr Attribut, eine liegende Mondsichel tragend. Neben ihr der schöne Hirte Endymion, dem Jupiter ewigen Schlaf und Jugend gewährte, mit geschlossenen Augen, freiem Oberkörper und in seinem rechten Arm einen Hirtenstab haltend. In ihn verliebte sich Diana unglücklich, da sie ihn nur nachts, in der Dunkelheit, küssen und umarmen konnte. Das vorliegende Werk erzählt von dieser unerfüllten Liebe und zeigt Diana, wie sie Endymion gerade umarmt. In der unteren Ecke ist der schlafende Hund des Endymion zu sehen, der die Göttin nicht bemerkt. Auf der linken Bildseite zwei hinter einem Baum versteckte geflügelte Putti, die dem Geschehen beiwohnen; einer von ihnen hat den Zeigefinger zum Mund erhoben und mahnt zur Stille. Qualitätvolle, gefühlsstarke Malerei, bei der die Zärtlichkeit Dianas besonders hervorgehoben wird, nicht zuletzt durch die gekonnt gesetzte Lichtführung, die die Körper der beiden und die Gesten Dianas betont.
Von dem genannten Künstler sind nur wenige Werke bekannt; jedoch der Malstil und die Malweise dieses Gemäldes lassen die charakteristischen Merkmale von Innocenzo Tacconi erkennen, der ein Schüler von Annibale Carracci (um 1560-1609) war.

Das Motiv mit „Diana und Endymion“ wurde von zahlreichen Malern dargestellt, u.a. von Francesco Solimena (1657-1747), Giuseppe Diamantini (1621-1705), Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) und Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806). (1260771) (18)

There are only few works known by Innocenzo Tacconi, however, the painting style and technique of the painting on offer for sale here show characteristic features typical for this student of Annibale Carracci (ca. 1560-1609).
