Das Gemälde steht in engem Zusammenhang mit dem Gemälde Bélisaire demandant l’aumône von Jacques-Louis David im Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille, das 1780/1781 entstand und 1781 im Salon ausgestellt wurde; eine Kopie dieses Gemäldes befindet sich im Louvre, Paris. Belisar (um 500-565) war ein Feldherr des Kaisers Justinian, von dem – wenn auch unbelegt – erzählt wurde, dass er als blinder Bettler unter der Porta Pinciana in Rom gestorben sei. 562 wurde er beschuldigt, an einer Verschwörung gegen Justinian beteiligt gewesen zu sein, wurde 563 jedoch vollständig rehabilitiert. Hier sehen wir also ein Gemälde, das einen kleineren Ausschnitt des legendären Geschehens wählt und sich auf den Kern der Geschichte beschränkt. Statt der Architektur wird ein tonaler Hintergrund gewählt, der Einfluss Caravaggios ist eindeutig zu sehen. (†)

Anmerkung:
Nach Erlangung des Prix de Rome verweilte er dort ab 1774 für sechs Jahre. Er verinnerlichte die römischen Ruinen wie in Pompeji, entdeckte jedoch auch Caravaggio für sich. (1252083) (13)
