(1231309) (18)
Giovanni Battista Castello,
also known as “Il Genovese”,
ca. 1547 Genoa – 1637/39
THE SERMON OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTISTPaper, laid on original thin wooden panel.
28.5 x 19.5 cm.
Monogrammed and dated “BC 1592“, “Genova”.
Panel slid in original old frame with glass at the front and slid-in rosewood back panel.
The scene of this Bible story is depicted in very fine, miniature painting style on paper.
Note:
For stabilizing purposes an old page of a handwritten book in brown ink with two text columns and red initial is stuck to the back panel, probably by the artist himself. Along the top margin “B C” and date “1592 - Genova”, probably also by the artist himself.
