(12301029) (13)
Vincent Laurensz. van der Vinne the Elder,
1629 Haarlem – 1702 ibid.
VANITAS STILL LIFE WITH CROWN, HOUR GLASS, SCEPTRE, BOOKS, OIL LAMP AND PORTRAIT OF JULIUS CAESAR Oil on canvas. Relined.
73 x 63 cm.
Signed “VCL Vandervinne” top right.
In ebonized profiled frame.
A similar vanitas painting was offered for sale at Christie’s London on 24 April 1998 with lot 60 and sold for GBP 56,500. Another vanitas still life showing an overturned crown with a skull inside it is listed with archive no. 104998 at the RKD in The Hague. On this occasion it is shown with a print of Charles I, King of England (1600-1649), that provides a terminus ante quem for the creation of the painting. In any case no activity is documented for Frans Hals' student van der Vinne in Haarlem prior to 1649.
