Das Gemälde betont breitformatig angelegt mit Wiedergabe eines mächtigen gemauerten Pfeilers mit antiken Doppellisenen und davorstehendem Sockelaufbau mit Volutenkämpfern. Nach rechts hin entwickelt sich eine doppelsäulige Arkade mit Durchblick auf eine heller beleuchtete Kirchenanlage mit mittelalterlicher Giebelfassade sowie Oval- und Bogenfenstern. Davor ein prächtig gestaltetes, barockes Tor mit bauplastischem figürlichen Aufbau. Rechts im Bild, als Repoussoir, eine angeschnittene Gewölbearchitektur, getragen von Rundsäulen mit ionischen Kapitellen. Ganz links im Bild Ausblick in fernere südliche Landschaft mit einer Grabpyramide in Art der Cestius-Pyramide von Rom. Im Vordergrund etliche Architekturfragmente sowie Figurenstaffage mit einem Schäfer in der Nachmittagsruhe, Personen im Gespräch sowie einem grün gekleideten Herrn in Rückenansicht, in Begleitung zweier weißer Jagdhunde.
Das Gemälde in flotter Pinseltechnik ausgeführt, in betont warmer Farbigkeit der architektonischen Elemente, die sich vor dem blauen Wolkenhimmel absetzen. So weist der Malstil noch die Farbauffassung von Giovanni Paolo Panini (1691-1765) oder Giuseppe Zais (1709-1784) auf, im Gegensatz zu der von Bernardo Bellotto in späteren Jahren spürbare Hinwendung zur exakt naturalistischen Malweise.
Die Signatur lässt darauf schließen, dass es sich hier um eine Zusammenarbeit von Vater und Sohn handelt, was auch der Pluralformulierung des Familiennamens entspricht. So lassen sich im Bild auch an einigen Stellen stilunterschiedliche Elemente finden, vor allem der Edelmann in der linken Bildecke mit seinen Hunden ist deutlich eher der Stilsprache des Bernardo verpflichtet, als etwa die weiteren Staffagefiguren.
