Dem Gemälde ist eine ausführliche Expertise von Maurizio Marini (ohne Jahr) beigegeben, mit einigen Vergleichsbeispielen, wie etwa „Mercurio e Argo“, Nationalgalerie London, oder „Tod des Seneca“, Alte Pinakothek München.
Das großformatige Gemälde, mit dunkeltoniger Farbgebung, zeigt den Heiligen mit entblößtem Oberkörper von links oben beleuchtet, in der linken Hand hält er ein Kreuz mit Corpus Christi, der rechte Arm ist auf sein Buch gelegt, dessen offene Seiten Schriftzüge aufweisen. Zwischen den Armen ein Schädel. Das caravaggeske Hell-Dunkel der Bildauffassung wird belebt durch das Rot im Manteltuch des Heiligen, das besonders die linke untere Ecke betont und gleichzeitig als Kardinalsfarbe attributiv für den Heiligen zu deuten ist. Der ruhigen kontemplativen Haltung des Heiligen hat der Maler in subtiler Weise Bewegung verliehen, indem er die Seiten des Buches aufgebogen erscheinen lässt. Lockerer Pinselauftrag, dessen Qualität unter anderem auch in der Behandlung des grau schimmernden Lockenhaares sowie des Bartes zu sehen ist, die Rückenpartie zeigt - im Gegensatz zum verschatteten Gesicht - betontes Sfumato. Das vorliegende Gemälde lässt sich durchaus mit weiteren Hauptwerken des Malers vergleichen, wie etwa das Bildnis des Heiligen Romuald (Accademia, Venedig) sowie ein weiteres, bekannt gewordenes Hieronymus-Gemälde, in dem ebenfalls das rote Tuch und das aufgeschlagene Buch im Bild dominieren (Dorotheum, Oktober 2015).
