Gian Giacomo Caprotti (also known as “Salaì” or “Salaino”)
ca. 1480 Milan - 1524, attributed
EMBRACE OF THE CHRIST CHILD AND INFANT SAINT JOHN
Tempera and oil on panel.
59 x 47.5 cm.
This impressive painting shows once again the extent of the influence Leonardo da Vinci on Lombard painting in the early decades of the 16th century. The composition can be traced back to a lost painting by da Vinci of Castor and Pollux or the Dioscuri, twins born to Leda after Jupiter seduced her in the guise of a swan, which is, nevertheless, well known through many copies by other artists. The offered painting is comparable with other works by Salaino such as Madonna with Child and the Saints Peter and Paul at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan or Saint John the Baptist at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, also in Milan.
