FIGHTING CATS AND DOGS
Oil on canvas.
120 x 179 cm.
Frame with artist’s name plate.
We would like to thank Dr Fred G. Meijer (RKD, The Hague) for his kind advice.
Frans Snyders trained with Pieter Brueghel the Younger and Hendrick van Balen and specialized in painting still lifes and animals, mostly in large scale formats. The motif of fighting cats and dogs reappears in several variations in the Å“uvre of this painter from Antwerp. The large- scale painting shows the dramatic encounter of two dogs and three cats whose fight has already caused a faience bowl containing raspberries to crash to the floor. A white hunting dog with brown spots has just seized a cat by the throat while another cat hisses at a dog bounding towards it from the left.
The bowl has fallen off a laid table in the top left and the floor is covered with shards of porcelain and fruit. A basket full of vegetables is depicted on the right of the chessboard pattern floor.
This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
