(1032407) (11)

NORWEGIAN MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPE WITH FJORD
Oil on canvas.
164 x 130 cm.
Signed lower left.
The Nordic mountain landscape is created in a dramatic composition: the lower part shows the emerald green, reflective, calm water of the fjord, winding between rock faces and disappearing to the left. Further up, tall mountain slopes covered with meadows slanting upwards to the right and left and wafts of mist rising upwards in between can be seen. The next section of the painting shows towering, snowy peaks (from a visionary perspective) illuminated by the sun from the left with white snow faces alternating with brown, snow-free rocks. At the top, slightly red-hued clouds are scattered in the sky. The painting goes far beyond real, naturalistic landscape depiction; the stylistic elements of Symbolism, to which the artist turned in ca. 1893, are clearly palpable. Early on, his modern composition and painting style already carried the influences of Lovis Corinth and Max Liebermann further. The painter, who was part of the aforementioned painters’ circle and a friend of Gerhard Hauptmann, founded the “Künstlerbund“ (Engl. Artist association) in Weimar together with Harry Graf-Kessler in 1903.
