Insgesamt in gutem Zustand. (10308310) (11)

COASTAL LANDSCAPE WITH GOATS AND A SHEPHERDESS SITTING ON THE WATERFRONT
Oil on panel.
50 x 82 cm.
Signed and dated “1904“ lower right.
Verso red lacquer seal.
The painter studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp under Edward Dujardin and later joined the workshop of Nicaise de Keyser. Numerous works by his hand found their way to the United States, especially to the collections of the Vanderbilt and John Davison Rockefeller families, but also in the collections of President Thomas Woodrow Wilson. The painter exhibited several times at the Salon in Antwerp and in 1849 and 1878 in Brussels. He exhibited at the World Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. The present painting shows a coastal landscape with a group of buildings elevated over a bay in the background on the right. The work is painted in a realistic, naturalistic style in beautiful colouration and with effective atmosphere.
