1552 Cologne - 1615 Prague, circle of
HOLY FAMILY WITH SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST AND SAINT ANNE
Oil on panel.
66 x 56 cm.
Stylistically the present painting can be attributed to Hans van Aachen. He was one of the most important artists of the late international Mannerism movement at the end of the 16th and early 17th century, when the artist was court painter for Emperor Rudolf II in Prague.
The composition, iconography, colouration and painting style of the present painting have a stylistic elegance and formal refinement, characteristic of the late work of von Aachen and his workshops, and are suggestive of von Aachen's study of Michelangelo, Raphael, Pontormo, Rosso, Correggio, Parmigianino, Titian and Veronese.
