Expert’s report for both paintings by Ferdinando Arisi.
These two still lifes give again rise to the difficult question of who their actual creator is. Is it Francesco Maltese, or are other painters (such as Francesco and/or Benedetto Fioravanti and/or Fieravino) their authors, even if they are not traceable - for decades, the experts have had divided opinions regarding this. It is known that both paintings have been mentioned in the inventories of many important Roman collectors and other antique sources. As can easily be recognized in these two skilfully staged still lifes, “Il Maltese” was famous for his opulent carpets and damascene curtains as a background for other object arrangements with good reason. This type of depiction - as can easily be seen in these counterparts - became the artist’s trademark and gave him the opportunity to beautifully accomplish his dense, very materialistic manner of painting and thereby creating exceptional illusionistic effects.
