Ende des 17. und Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts war Paolo de Matteis einer der erfolgreichsten Künstler Neapels. Gelernt hat er bei Luca Giordano bzw. in dessen Atelier. Was er bei Giordano erlernte, blieb, trotz weiterer wichtiger Lehrmeister in Rom wie Gianmaria Morandi und später Carlo Maratti, zeitlebens in ihm verwurzelt. Das hier vorliegende Monumentalgemälde entstand mit ziemlicher Sicherheit um 1690 und beweist seine Verbundenheit zu Giordano, der wiederholt den Raub der Sabinerinnen darstellte. De Matteis Gemälde hält sich sehr genau an die Vorgaben von Luca Giordano aus den Jahren um 1680, die sich in Genua in Privatbesitz befinden (siehe auch O. Ferrari, G. Scavizzi, Luca Giordano. L'opera completa (Gesamtwerk), Neapel 2000, A273, S. 296-297) oder im Palazzo Reale in Caserta zu sehen sind (ebenda, A259, S. 325) - allerdings unter Einbringung eigener künstlerischer Vorstellungen. Das Gemälde ähnelt stilistisch auch anderen großformatigen Bildern von de Matteis, die Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts entstanden, wie zum Beispiel die beiden Bilder „Allegorie della Bontà e della Mansuetudine“ (Allegorie der Güte und Sanftmut), zu sehen im Museo della Certosa di San Martino in Neapel, „Caino uccide Abele“ (Kain tötet Abel), „Adamo ed Eva piangono Abele ucciso“ (Adam und Eva beklagen Abels Tod), beide im Statens Museum for Kunst in Kopenhagen, und „Apollo e Dafne“ (Apoll und Daphne), Privatbesitz, Amerika (siehe auch N. Spinosa, Pittura napoletana del Settecento, Neapel 1999, S. 250-252).
