Dieses eindrucksvolle Bildnis eines Mathematikers steht am Schnittpunkt verschiedener Typologien, die für das Schaffen von Salvator Rosa von zentraler Bedeutung sind: die abstrahierten Bilder von antiken Philosophen, Gelehrten und Wissenschaftlern in der Tradition von Ribera; die konzeptuelle, philosophische Malerei, die in der Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts auch dank der Verbreitung des Stoizismus in Mode war; und vielleicht das Selbstportrait (wenn sich diese Vermutung für unsere Leinwand voll und ganz bestätigen ließe), das er eifrig und auf unterschiedlichste Weise praktizierte. Der beste, wenn auch nicht endgültige Beleg für die faszinierende Hypothese, dass Rosa sich hier selbst darstellen (und verklären) wollte, ist das Selbstbildnis, das sich heute im Musée des Beaux-Arts in Straßburg befindet, wo wir ihn in den Vierzigern finden müssten, also einige Jahre jünger, als unser Gemälde vermuten lässt (siehe Vergleichsabbildung, erworben 1987). In diesem raffinierten Werk, einem Idealbild und gleichzeitig einem lebendigen und konkreten Porträt, kommen das distanzierte Desinteresse an weltlichen Dingen, die absolute Konzentration auf den Gegenstand der eigenen Meditation, aber auch die vitale Energie des Denkens in seiner Entwicklung in einer einzigartigen Mischung zum Ausdruck.
Interessante Vergleiche für unser Gemälde – stilistisch, ikonographisch, aber auch ideell – bieten Heraklit und Demokrit aus dem Kunsthistorischen Museum in Wien, der Philosoph mit dem Schädel aus dem Christ Church College, Oxford, und der Belisarius aus Renishaw Hall in Stafford (Derbyshire).

The comparison with a self-portrait of the artist in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Straßburg, supports the hypothesis, the artist portrayed himself in the painting on offer for sale – although in a glorified manner.
