Das Werk ist wohl eine kleinere Skizze des Original-Gemäldes, auf dem im oberen Bereich weitere Figuren gezeigt werden. Dargestellt sind hier Aeneas und Dido, die Königin von Karthago, als sie auf der Jagd durch einen Sturm von dem Rest der Gruppe getrennt werden und Zuflucht in einer Höhle suchen. Dido hat dem Aeneas die Hand gereicht und scheint ihn zur Höhle zu führen.
