Vor einem wolkenverhangenen Himmel sitzt links ein junger Hirte, der sich mit melancholischer Geste zurücklehnt und nach rechts aus dem Bild herausschaut. Neben ihm ruht seine Herde, während im Hintergrund ein anderer Hirt in Richtung des Dorfes am Horizont davonläuft.
Die Wiedergabe der unterschiedlichen Lichtstimmungen zwischen heller beleuchteten Hauptelementen des Bildes und verschattetem Hintergrund ist meisterlich gelöst.
