Das im Zentrum des Bildes auf dem Stroh liegende Christuskind ist die einzige Lichtquelle der Komposition. Über dem Kind am zweitmeisten - entsprechend ihrer Wichtigkeit - beleuchtet Maria in blauem Gewand. Darum Josef, die Hirten und im Himmel zwei Putti. De Favanne, der besonders die Werke in Madrid und Paris studierte und kopierte (Anklänge an Rubens sind auch bei dem vorliegenden Gemälde nicht von der Hand zu weisen), geriet in Konflikt mit der Inquisition und kam ins Gefängnis nach Toledo, aus welchem er jedoch auf königlichen Befehl entlassen wurde.
