1912 Mantova – 1995 Rome

Turcato is one of the leading Italian artists of the post war-period. He completed his studies of nude painting at the Academy of Venice, before he moved to Milan in 1937, where he worked for the architect Giovanni Muzio. Two years later he already had his first solo exhibition and in 1942 he participated in the 23rd Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte della Città di Venezia. A couple of months later the artist went to Rome and joined the Italian Resistance.
Together with Renato Birolli, Pericle Fazzini, Renato Guttuso, Ennio Morlotti, Giuseppe Santomaso, Emilio Vedova and Alberto Viani Turcato belonged to the “Fronte Nuovo delle Arti“ (New Front of Art). The aim of the group was to renew the Italian art scene. Due to disagreements the group was disbanded and split into the “realists” gathering around Renato Guttuso and the “abstracts” forming the informal Gruppo degli Otto in 1952 joined by Giulio Turcato, Giuseppe Santomaso, Afro Basaldella, Ennio Morlotti, Mattia Moreni, Renato Birolli, Antonio Corpora, and Emilio Vedova. They combined gestural expression and impulsive brush strokes as well as geometric-linear elements in their work.
These tendencies also influenced Turcato’s work outside the Gruppo degli Otto, which split up in 1954. In his early working period the artist created landscapes and still lifes, then he received his inspiration from cubism and from fauvism, predominantly Henri Matisse, until he found his characteristic style, which integrates abstract with figurative elements in intense colours.
Giulio Turcato, who frequently participated in the Venice Biennale, is a well-known international artist due to the immense number of exhibitions, such as the comprehensive retrospective in Rome (1974), where more than 300 works were shown or the exhibition at the Musée de l'Athénée, Geneva (1980), as well as his solo exhibition at the Münchner Staatsgalerie Moderner Kunst (1985).
