A Maiolica Plate with Istoriato Embellishments
Diameter: 25.7 cm.
Urbino, 1535.

With the inscription "1535 Mercurio il capo à l'cchiuto Argo (t)aglia"_ on the back (trans. "Mercury knocks the head off of the multi-eyed Argus"_) and likely with the monogram "IG"_. Workshop of the "LU UR"_ painter. Broken several times and restored, painted over on both sides, a few chips and light enamel spalling.

Note:
It is likely that the engraving by Jacopo Caraglio after Perino del Vaga "Mercury visits Herse" from "the Love of the Gods" served as the model for the figure of Mercury. Due to the stylistic conformity with plates, for example in the Spovieri Collection, Mallet and Wilson (1996, pg. 229, no. 96) suggest the "Lu Ur" painter, who is likely "Luca da Urbino" or "Luca Urbini".
