Der Fuß leicht eingezogen, Schulter etwas hervortretend, schmaler Hals. Die unterste Zone ist bemalt mit feinen, geometrischen und mit Lanzett-Blättern dekorierten Ringen, die über die Sockelzone bis zur Wandung laufen. Der zylindrische Körper ist bemalt mit Blattmasken und Grotesken auf sehr dunkel manganfarbenem Fond, wodurch sich das Dekor prächtig und kontrastreich abzeichnet. Die darüber umlaufende Schrift ist in Blau auf Weiß aufgetragen und lautet "ELLI/ALESCOF" bzw. "DIA/DRAGAN/F". Beide Gefäße sind je auf einer kleinen, aufgemalten Plakette datiert "1519". Die Bemalung in Blau, Mangan, Schwarz, Gelb, Ocker, Grün und Rot auf weißem Fond. Schöner Zustand.

Anmerkung:
Mögliche Deutungen für die Beschriftungen: Die Aufschrift "ELLI/ALESCOF" kennzeichnet den Inhalt als ein Elixir. "DIA/DRAGAN/F" steht für Dia = hergestellt aus; Dragante bedeutet Traganthgummi. Das "F" am Ende der beiden Beschriftungen könnte für "fino", also "fein" stehen.

Pair of maiolica albarelli
Height: 13 cm.
Diameter: 23.4 cm.
Dated '1519'.
Faenza, 1519.

The base is tapering with a marginally bulged shoulder below a narrow neck. The lowest part, from the foot to the lower body, is painted with bands of delicate, geometrical patterns including lance-shaped leaves. The cylindrical body is painted with masks and grotesques made of foliage on a very dark manganese ground, which allows the décor to stand out luxuriantly in high contrast. Above that, an inscription in a blue and white band around the body, which reads ELLI/ALESCOF or DIA/DRAGAN/F. Both jars are dated '1519' on a small painted badge. Painted in blue, manganese, black, yellow, ochre, green and red on a white ground. Good condition.

Notes:
Possible interpretations for the inscriptions: ELLI/ALESCOF labels the content as an elixir. DIA/DRAGAN/F stands for 'dia' (made from); Dragante interprets Tragacanth gum. The 'F' at the end of both inscriptions could stand for 'fino' (fine).
