Aus der Kavaliersperspektive blickt der Betrachter auf ein Plateau über eine hügelige Landschaft, die aus verschiedentlich gebrochenen Wolken ihre abwechslungsreiche Beleuchtung empfängt. Die ungeheuerliche Anzahl von Staffagefiguren, die laut Ertz ebenso wie die Landschaft von Brueghel stammen, machen das kleinformatige Gemälde zu einem besonderen optischen Erlebnis, ist das Auge doch stets in Bewegung, mitunter auch um den eigentlichen Grund der Zusammenkunft zu erkennen. Dieser wird im Mittelgrund offenbar, wo Christus am Kreuze hängend sich vor dem helleren Himmel leicht abzeichnet. Ertz datiert die Tafel in die zweite Hälfte der 1620er-Jahre und vergleicht sie mit drei Gemälden, die sich einmal 1995 in der Galerie de Jonckheere, einmal 2009 in Madrid befunden haben, und einmal in der National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (Inv.Nr. 94/5) verwahrt wird. Accompanied by an expert’s report by Dr Klaus Ertz, Lingen, dated 8 May 2010.

According to Ertz, the enormous number of staffage figures and the landscape are by Brueghel and make the small format painting a special visual experience, as the eye is constantly in motion, occasionally to recognize the actual reason for the meeting. Ertz dates the panel to the second half of the 1620s and compares it with three paintings that were held at the Galerie de Jonckheere in 1995, in Madrid in 2009, and in the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (inv. no. 94/5).
