Der für seinen humorvollen, fantastischen Realismus bekannt gewordene Münchner Maler, der auch in Südfrankreich arbeitete, hat historische wie zeitgenössische Persönlichkeiten und Ereignisse karikaturartig ins Bild gesetzt. Visionär, aber auch mit kritischem Blick auf die Gegenwart, schuf er Bilder, die auf den ersten Blick originell witzig, im Grunde aber höchst mehrdeutig sind. „The last dinner“ etwa (Museum Brot und Kunst, Ulm, 1993), zeigt eine apokalyptische Vision: ein abendlich gekleidetes Paar an einem Tisch in ausgetrockneter, weiter Landschaft, der Ober reicht einen Hummer, der sich genauer betrachtet als Skorpion erweist.
Hier wird die Rolle Napoleons in der Geschichte Europas persifliert: der junge Napoleon sitzt noch friedlich neben Madame Recamier, das Gegenstück zeigt den Herrscher auf dem Gesäß Europas reitend – in förmlicher Anlehnung an das Gemälde von Jaques Louis David „Bonaparte beim Überschreiten der Alpen“ aus dem Jahre 1800. Die kritische Aussage des Bildes verweist auf den Zusammenbruch Europas auf der Ruhebank.
Der Maler der vorliegenden Bilder hat kopistisch die Bildmotive übernommen, jedoch auf einem Schild am Sofarahmen, der in Waskes Original nicht zu sehen ist, monogrammiert. Auch Waske hatte gelegentlich seine auf Historie bezogenen Gemälde in alte Rahmen gefügt. A.R.

Known for his humorous, fantastic realism, the Munich painter, who also worked in the South of France, portrayed historical and contemporary personalities and events like a caricature. A visionary, who also held a critical view of the present, he created paintings that are novel and funny at first glance, but fundamentally highly ambiguous. “The Last Dinner”, for example, (Museum Brot und Kunst, Ulm, 1993) shows an apocalyptic vision: set in a vast, parched landscape, a couple is sitting at a table in evening dress while a waiter serves lobster, which, on closer inspection, turns out to be a scorpion.
In the paintings on offer for sale in this lot the role of Napoleon in the history of Europe is satirized: the young Napoleon is still sitting peacefully next to Madame Recamier, the counterpart shows the ruler riding on the buttocks of Europe – a formal reference to the famous painting by Jacques Louis David titled “Bonaparte crossing the Alps”, created in 1800. The paintings critical message refers to the collapse of Europe on the resting bench. The painter of the two present works copied the motifs and signed with a monogram on a sign attached to the sofa frame, which is not part of Waske’s original painting. It is known that Waske himself occasionally added old frames to his history-related paintings.
