Morgante, eigentlich Braccio di Bartolo, war Hofzwerg der Familie Medici, von Cosimo I. bis Ferdinando I. Seiner Gestalt, auch seines Körperumfangs wegen, wurde er uns von vielen Künstlern in Erinnerung gebracht. Der Maler Agnolo Bronzino etwa porträtierte ihn von zwei Seiten unbekleidet, Valerio Cigoli schuf die bekannte Marmorfigur des auf einer Schildkröte sitzenden Morgante als Bacchus im Florentiner Boboli-Garten. Der Hofzwerg wurde so berühmt, dass der Bildhauer Giambologna ihn im Relief des Reiterdenkmals für Cosimo I verewigt hat. In einer Brunnenplastik lässt Giambologna ihn auf einer Schnecke sitzen. Die Beliebtheit des Motives ließ schon zu Lebenszeit Giambolognas zahlreiche Wiederholungen entstehen, vor allem in der Kleinplastik. In einigen Beispielen wird der Zwerg nackt mit Flöte (Victoria and Albert Museum London), dann aber auch mit Weinpokal in der vorgehaltenen Rechten gezeigt.

Diesem Typus gehört auch die hier vorliegende Figur an. Dickleibig steht er mit kurzen Beinen im Kontrapost, der Kopf kurzbärtig, in der rechten Hand ist noch der Stiel des Weinglases zu erkennen. Eine Figur desselben Typus´ befindet sich im Metropolitan Museum of Art, dort ebenso als „nach Giambologna“ betitelt. Schöne, braune Alterspatina. A. R.

Braccio di Bartolo, better known as Morgante was a court dwarf of the Medici Family, from the reign of Cosimo I to Ferdinando I. His appearance, also due to his corpulence was portrayed by many artists. The painter Agnolo Bronzino portrayed him naked from two sides and Valerio Cigoli created the famous marble sculpture of Morgante as Bacchus sitting astride a tortoise at the Boboli Gardens in Florence. The court dwarf was so famous that the sculptor Giambologna incorporated him in the relief of the equestrian statue for Cosimo I. Giambologna incorporated him in a fountain sculpture sitting on a snail. The popularity of the motif led to numerous copies already being made during Gianbologna’s lifetime, especially in the form of small sculptures. In several examples the dwarf is depicted naked with a flute (Victoria and Albert Museum London), or with a wine cup in his outstretched right hand. The sculpture on offer for sale here is part of this type. Corpulent, with short legs standing in contrapposto, his head with a short beard and, in his right hand, the stem of a former wineglass can just be made out. A figure of the same type is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where it is also titled “after Giambologna”. Beautiful, brown aged patina.
