Das Gemälde wiederholt bildinhaltlich die sogenannte „Montalto Madonna“ des Carracci, die bereits Giovanni Pietro Bellori (1615 - 1696) in seiner 1672 verfassten Biografie erwähnt hat und das um 1597 in Rom entstand. Allerdings variiert das hier vorliegende Bild dadurch, dass es den jugendlichen Johannesknaben nicht zeigt, auch der Hintergrund, der in der Frühfassung eine kannelierte Säule zeigt, ist hier abgeändert, wie ebenso die Landschaft links oben mit einer im Halbdunkel gemalten Darstellung, bei der es sich wohl um die Flucht nach Ägypten handelt.
Annibale war Bruder des Agostino Carracci (1557 - 1602) und lernte bei seinem Cousin Ludovico Carracci (1555-1619) in Parma. Erst 1595 von Kardinal Farnese nach Rom berufen, kam er mit den Werken Michelangelos Buonarroti (1475 - 1564) und Raffaello Santi (1483 - 1520) in engste Berührung. (1192143) (11)
