Die Zuweisung an den genannten Künstler erfolgte durch Pofessor Bernard Aikema. Beigegeben eine kurze Dokumentation des Experten, der das Werk in die 1640er- bis 1650er-Jahre datiert.

Das Thema ist dem Buch Daniel entnommen, hier hat der Maler die Visionslegende sowohl im Vordergrund als auch im Hintergrund synchronoptisch wiedergegeben. Der junge Prophet kniet vor einem Engel, dem er die prophetische Eingebung verdankt. Rechts hinten die Stadtmauer von Babylon, auf dessen Tor der Prophet noch einmal stehend gezeigt wird, auf die dunklen Wolken weisend, die gleichsam als Vorboten über den Untergang Babels erscheinen. Als Nebenelemente aus der Buchlegende erscheinen hier in den Wolken eine Ziege sowie eine weitere weiße Ziege in Nähe des Tors. Der caravaggeske Einfluss ist unverkennbar, die Farbauffassung des Manierismus hat sich in den rosafarbigen Gewändern niedergeschlagen. Thematisch ist die Vision des „Endes der Zeiten“ gemeint, während der Engel Gabriel sich schützend über Daniel, und damit auch über dessen Volk neigt. †

Initially a student of Alessandro Varotari (also known as “Padovanino”, 1588 - 1649), he was greatly influenced by works of Titian and Giorgione and also Carlo Saraceni and later Bernardo Strozzi. He was one of the leading painters of religious subjects in Venice during the 1640s. He married the daughter of the Carravagist Nicolas Régnier.

Professor Bernard Aikema has attributed the painting to della Vecchia. A short expert‘s report, dating the work in a period of the 1640s and 1650s is enclosed.

The theme is taken from the Book of Daniel - here the painter shows the legend of the vision in the foreground and the background in synchronoptic view. Carravaggio‘s influence is obvious and the colour concept of Mannerism is reflected in the pink-hued garments. The depiction illustrates the vision of the “Time of the End”, while the Angel Gabriel is protectively leaning over Daniel and his people. †
