Günther Uecker,

Lebt und arbeitet in Düsseldorf und St. Gallen.

Nach dem Studium der Malerei in Wismar und seinem Studium an der Kunstschule in Berlin-Weißensee ging Uecker 1955 in den Westen, nach Düsseldorf. Hier studierte Uecker bei Otto Pankok (1893-1966) an der Kunstakademie, wo er selbst von 1974 bis 2005 als Professor tätig war. Die ersten „Nagelbilder“, für die der bedeutende deutsche Künstler schließlich berühmt wurde, entstanden Ende der 1950er Jahre. Aber erst nach Auflösung der Gruppe ZERO, im Jahre 1966, setzt Uecker Nägel als sein Hauptgestaltungsmittel ein. Seit den 1980er Jahren nimmt er in seinen Arbeiten auch Stellung zu politischen Themen, zu Naturkatastrophen und Umweltproblemen. Die vorliegende eindrucksvolle Arbeit ist in der oberen Hälfte durch wogende, wabernde und damit Dynamik und Lichteffekte erzielende, dicht gesetzte Nägel dominiert. Von unten führt ein künstlich eingearbeiteter Riss durch die Arbeit und verjüngt sich mit Eintauchen in die Nägelschwaden. Gleich einer klaffenden Wunde zieht sich der Riss durch die Fläche. Dabei erzeugt der Künstler jedoch einen gleichsam poetischen und weniger aggressiven Charakter, der bei aller Rohheit auch eine gewisse Zartheit innewohnt. (1100201) (12)

After studying painting in Wismar and at the Art Academy in Berlin-Weißensee, Uecker moved to West Germany in 1955 and settled in Düsseldorf. Here, Uecker studied with Otto Pankok (1893-1966) at the Art Academy where he himself became a professor from 1974 to 2005. The first “nail paintings” that made this German artist famous were created towards the end of the 1950s. After the breakup of the artist’s group ZERO in 1966, Uecker uses nails as his main design medium. From the 1980s onwards his work deals with political topics, natural catastrophes and ecological problems.
The upper half of the striking work on offer in this lot is densely set with nails in waves and swirls, creating dynamic and light effects. An artificial tear starts from the bottom of the work and tapers towards the top, eventually disappearing into the motions of the nails. Just like a gaping wound this rupture tears through the surface. However, despite the brutality and aggression the artist manages to also convey a poetical character and a certain kind of fragility.
