Das Jesuskind vor einem großen Buch zwischen Maria und Josef, die in der Übung des Lesens behilflich sind. Das Kind blickt fragend zur Mutter empor, die ihre Hand in erklärender Geste hochhält. Die Malerei insgesamt in starkem, caravaggeskem Hell-Dunkel, die Farben in überwiegend Brauntönen, wiederum typisch für die neapolitanische Malerei, aber auch zu finden in der spanischen Kunst. The Christ Child is depicted in front of a large book between The Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph who are assisting him in his reading. The Child looks up interrogatively at his mother who is holding up her hand in an explanatory gesture. Overall the painting shows a pronounced chiaroscuro in the manner of Caravaggio and the colour scheme is predominantly in shades of brown, which is typical for Neapolitan painting but can also be found in Spanish art.
