Paolo Finoglio,
um 1590 Neapel – 1645 Conversano, Werkstätten

Diese kraftvolle Darstellung von Jesus und der Ehebrecherin (Joh. 8, 2-11) ähnelt einem Gemälde gleichen Inhalts von Paolo Finoglio, das im Museo Proviciale in Lecce zu sehen ist. Es unterscheidet sich nur in kleinen Abweichungen (besonders bei der Figur des Pharisäers am rechten äußeren Bildrand) und durch das kleinere Format. Dieses Gemälde entstand vermutlich in der zweiten Hälfte der dritten Dekade des 17. Jahrhunderts in Neapel, als auch das Fresko „Circoncisione” in der Certosa di San Martino entstand. Finoglios Gemälde aus jener Zeit weisen noch deutliche Spuren jenes kräftigen, an Caravaggio (1571-1610) erinnernden Naturalismus auf, jedoch auch Anklänge an Battistello Caracciolo (1578-1635), Hendrik van Somer (ca. 1615-1684/85) und Artemisia Gentileschi (ca.1593-1652/53). Das vorliegende Werk zeigt, wie gut die Werkstätten von Finoglio zu arbeiten verstanden und wie beeindruckend der Originalentwurf des Meisters gewesen sein muss, von dem es in der Kirche SS. Salvatore in Capurso in der Nähe von Bari noch eine weiter Fassung gibt.

CHRIST AND THE ADULTERESS

Aside from some minor variations and its smaller format, this vibrant depiction of Jesus and the adulteress (John, 8: 2-11) is very close to a painting of the same subject by Paolo Finoglio today held at the Museo Proviciale in Lecce. The painting was probably created ca. 1625-1630 in Naples around the same time as the Circoncisione in Certosa di San Martino. The present work shows how well Finoglio's workshops operated and how impressive the original design by the master must have been, another version of which still exists at the San Salvatore Church in Capurso near Bari.
