Girolamo Sicciolante war in Rom einer der bedeutendsten Maler im dritten Viertel des 16. Jahrhunderts. Um 1540 gehörte er zur Equipe von Pierino Del Vaga (1501 -1547), die mit den Arbeiten in der Sala Paolina der Engelsburg betraut war. Der Einfluss von Del Vaga ist in Girolamos Jugendwerken deutlich zu spüren, in denen sich der an Raphael erinnernde Klassizismus mit Andeutungen an den Manierismus verbindet; diese Verquickungen rücken Girolamo Sicciolante in die Nähe von Jacopino del Conte (1510-1598). Im vorliegenden Gemälde, das wahrscheinlich gegen Ende der 1550er-Jahre entstand, beeindrucken die Würde und Stabilität der Figuren, die Klarheit der Struktur und die archaische Ausgewogenheit, die so typisch für die religiösen Werke von Sicciolante sind. Mit Sicherheit war Del Vaga das Vorbild bei der ausgewogenen und dennoch monumentalen Gestaltung. Allerdings sind einige Lösungen doch weniger gelungen, woraus man auf Eingriffe seitens der Werkstatt schließen könnte. Das Werk weist deutliche Ähnlichkeit mit anderen Gemälden aus derselben Zeit von Sicciolante auf, wie zum Beispiel dem Altarbild der Abtei von Valvisciolo (heute Sermoneta, Castello Caetani), der Madonna con sei Santi in der Kirche San Martino Maggiore in Bologna und vor allem mit der Sacra Famiglia con San Giovannino e San Michele Arcangelo, die in der Galleria Nazionale in Parma zu sehen ist. Girolamo Siciolante was one of the most famous Roman painters of the third quarter of the 16th century. In ca. 1540 he was part of Perino del Vaga's team commissioned with the work on the Sala Paolina of the Castel Sant'Angelo. The present painting, which was probably created towards the end of the 1550s, impresses with the dignity and solidity of the figures, the clear composition and archaic proportion, so typical for religious works by Siciolante. Del Vaga certainly acted as a model with regards to the balanced and yet monumental design. The work shows strong similarities with other paintings by Siciolante from the same period, such as the altarpiece of Valvisciolo Abbey (today Sermoneta, Castello Caetani), the Madonna con sei Santi in the San Martino Maggiore church in Bologna and, above all, with the Sacra Famiglia con San Giovannino e San Michele Arcangelo held at the National Gallery in Parma.
