Das Thema gehört in die Reihe jener Bilder der italienischen Malerei, in denen die Wiederentdeckung antiker Grabmäler, Grotten und Höhlen zumeinst in romantischer Weise wiedergegeben wurde. So ist auch hier die Szenerie in beinahe dunkles, spätabendliches Licht getaucht, gespenstisch wirken die Lichtreflexe auf den Säulen und Felsbrocken, die dürren Wurzeln erscheinen wie Blitze. Einzig die gebauschten Wolken im Hintergrund geben helleres Licht. Die Personen sind damit beschäftigt, einen Sarkophag aus einer Höhle herauszuschaffen, zwei Reiter seitlich links betrachten den Vorgang. Ein aus einer Höhle hervortretender Mann in nahezu priesterlicher Kleidung betrachtet das Geschehen argwöhnisch. Flotte, virtuose Malweise. (1021562) (11)
